This exhibition by Olga Lewicka presents one large-sized abstraction painting.
According to Lewicka, the title of the exhibition - “A Large-Sized Abstraction Against Theory & Politics” (”Wielkoformatowa abstrakcja przeciwko teorii i polityce” in Polish) - reflects the project within the framework of which she started to paint the currently exhibited work rather than the work itself. The initial project was to produce the work of abstraction painting against theoretical abstraction by the “theoretician” and also against political abstraction by the “politician,” and these “theoretician” and “politician” are here understood as socially established institutions and professions. It was, in other word, a project of subversion by double abstraction (in a way of “double negation”).
The final work currently in exhibition, however, carries another name: “What may be is NOW.” Lewicka explains this as a change of heart: she liked the painting so much that she did not want it to be reduced to a work within the narrow frame of the initial project, and at the last minute, she decided to name it otherwise and let it take a different path than the destiny that it was to fulfill.
This “change of heart” may be regarded as another (double) stroke of subversion against “abstraction” - now that you can see and touch the painting in reality.
Galeria Entropia is open Mon-Fri, 13:00-19:00, and the exhibition till 16.05.2006.
